One Laptop Per Child to Launch Commercial Offering

July 26th, 2007 Anthony Towry

By Christmas the average American might have the ability to purchase the much talked about XO laptop. The story over at eWeek.

OLPC is a pretty awesome project with some ambitious goals. Basically, their objective is to bring computing/technology/education to children in economically depressed parts of the world.

The device itself is incredibly well thought out and includes features necessary to keep it up and running in extremely harsh conditions (environmental and social). I'm in love with the whole idea and if this thing becomes available I'm all over it.

[in]secure - Issue 12 available

July 26th, 2007 Anthony Towry

[in]secure magazine has just released their 12th issue. If you're not familiar with this e-zine, you should be. It has a good balance of information for the c-level guys as well as information for the front line.

insecure mag issue 12 cover

This issue hits on some of the main areas of PCI compliance, contains an interesting interview with Jeremiah Grossman of Whitehat Security. Another article of not is "Compliance, IT Security and a Clear Conscience", which I thought was especially relevant to organizations struggling with decisions related to investing effort in security.

IBM to offer AIX 6 Beta

July 25th, 2007 Anthony Towry

I was reading my latest issue of Computerworld and ran across an article about IBM's AIX platform. It's probably been close to 10 years since I've touched AIX myself, opting for the easier to obtain Linux distros and occasional BSD.

IBM hasn't been releasing beta versions of AIX to the public. Which, I can't imagine that keeping the secret sauce locked up like that does wonders for QA and upgrade adoption. It looks like that's all over now. IBM is releasing the first Open Beta of AIX 6. One thing, you do have to register with their site (something I was uninterested in doing) before you can get to the goodies.

Bustaname for Brainstorming Domain Names

July 24th, 2007 Anthony Towry

I found an article on Digg that pointed me to Bustaname.com, a site that takes a list of words and starts combining them to show you the available domains that are out there. It doesn't sound like a whole lot, but I can tell you this tool has a place.

If you're in the market for a domain and don't know what you want to buy yet, check this out.

CalcDec’s move to Wordpress

July 24th, 2007 Anthony Towry

After years of running CalculatedDecision.com on nothing more than a pile of .html pages I've decided to take the page into Wordpress.  The pages were disgustingly constructed, thanks to Dreamweaver's IDE and my laziness.  Following my gut, I decided to throw them all out!  I'll be slowly seeding the new format with salvaged CD content, this is quite a process.

Hopefully this move will result in a cleaner and more interactive experience.  Let me know what you think.
